Zomato's platform fee has been a sore point for users who thought "free delivery" meant no extra charges. It doesn't — and the fee varies by order size and membership. Here's how it works and how to keep your effective cost down.

What is the Zomato platform fee?

A per-order fee Zomato charges on top of food cost and delivery. It's usually in the ₹2–5 range for non-Gold users and often ₹1–3 for Gold members, depending on order value and region. It shows up as a separate line item before you pay.

So "free delivery" means no delivery fee; it does not mean no platform fee. Always check the breakdown before confirming.

When does the fee hurt most?

On small orders. A ₹3 fee on a ₹150 order is 2% of the bill. On a ₹500 order it's 0.6%. So the fee is proportionally heavier when you're ordering for one or snacking. If you're stacking Gold + card + UPI, a small order can still be worth it — but the fee eats into the benefit.

Practical tip: Batching orders or hitting a minimum (e.g. ₹299 for a coupon) often makes the platform fee a smaller share of the total.

How to still come out ahead

  1. Use Zomato Gold if you order often. Gold reduces the platform fee and gives delivery waivers. Do the math: if your monthly orders × fee saved (and delivery saved) exceed the Gold cost, it's worth it.
  2. Stack a rewards card. A card that gives 5% on dining/food can offset the fee and then some. Pay with that card on Zomato so the fee is at least earning you points.
  3. UPI cashback. If your bank has a "Zomato UPI" cashback, use it. Every rupee back offsets the fee.
  4. Compare with Swiggy. Sometimes Swiggy has no platform fee or a lower one for the same restaurant. Check both apps before ordering.

Gold vs no Gold — quick comparison

| Order value | Platform fee (no Gold) | Platform fee (Gold) | |------------|------------------------|----------------------| | ₹200 | ~₹3 | ~₹1 | | ₹400 | ~₹4 | ~₹2 | | ₹600 | ~₹5 | ~₹2 |

Approximate; actuals vary by city and offer.

So on a ₹400 order you save about ₹2 with Gold. If you do 10 such orders a month, that's ₹20. If Gold costs you ₹149/month and you also save on delivery, the maths can work. If you order once a month, Gold may not be worth it just for the fee.

Bottom line

The platform fee is here to stay. Minimize its impact by: (1) using Gold if you order frequently, (2) stacking a good card and UPI, and (3) comparing Zomato vs Swiggy for the same restaurant. Make every rupee count.
