Air India Flying Returns is the national carrier's loyalty program. With the airline's expanded network and new ownership, redeeming miles for domestic and short-haul international flights can be strong value — if you know where to earn miles and how to burn them.
Earning Flying Returns miles
- Flying Air India: Earn miles on revenue tickets; tier status multiplies earn.
- Credit card transfers: Several banks let you transfer reward points to Flying Returns (e.g. Axis, HDFC, ICICI — check current partners and transfer ratios). Typically 2–4 bank points = 1 Flying Returns mile; ratios vary by card and promotion.
- Hidden gems — Zomato and others: Zomato has run "Earn Flying Returns miles on orders" campaigns: link your Flying Returns account and earn miles per order. Other partners (retail, fuel, utilities) appear from time to time. Always check the Flying Returns "Earn" section and partner offers so everyday spend turns into miles.
Transfer partners and sweet spots
- Bank → Flying Returns: If your card allows transfer to Flying Returns, compare the cost in bank points per mile with the value you get when redeeming. For example, if a domestic return flight costs 10,000 miles and the same ticket is ₹8,000, each mile is worth ₹0.80. If you transfer at 3:1, you're effectively paying 3 bank points for ₹0.80 of value — so your bank points need to be worth at least that.
- Sweet spots: Redemptions on premium economy and business on certain routes often yield better value per mile than economy. Domestic short hops can be good or poor value depending on cash fare; run the maths before you redeem.
- Expiry: Flying Returns miles expire after a period of inactivity; check current T&C. A small redemption or earning activity can extend validity.
When it makes sense
- Transfer from cards when your card's alternate redemptions (e.g. statement credit, other airlines) give lower value than Flying Returns for the trip you want.
- Chase Zomato/partner earn when the miles per rupee spent beat your card's direct reward for that spend.
- Redeem for flights when the cash price is high and the miles required are reasonable — avoid burning miles on cheap fares where cash is better.
Bottom line: Flying Returns is most useful if you fly Air India (or partners) and can earn miles cheaply via card transfers or partner offers like Zomato. Make every rupee count.
