Transfer partners, award charts, and sweet spot redemptions for Marriott Bonvoy — when to use points for stays and when to convert to airline miles.

Marriott Bonvoy is one of the largest hotel loyalty programs globally, with a strong presence in India (Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, Ritz-Carlton, and more). Points can be used for free nights or transferred to airline partners — so understanding both use cases is key.

Earning Bonvoy points

  • Stays: Earn points on eligible rates at Marriott brands; elite status multiplies earn.
  • Credit cards: AmEx Marriott Bonvoy and Axis Marriott cards earn Bonvoy points on spend. Some general reward cards (e.g. AmEx Membership Rewards, certain others) allow transfer to Bonvoy; ratios vary (e.g. 1:1 or 2:1). Check current transfer partners and bonuses.
  • Partners: Flights, car hire, and retail partners can credit Bonvoy; typically lower earn than stays or card.

Sweet spot redemptions — hotels

  • Award chart: Marriott uses dynamic pricing in many regions, but Category 1–3 properties can still offer strong value — e.g. 15,000–30,000 points per night at mid-tier hotels where cash rates are ₹8,000–15,000. That can mean ₹0.30–0.50+ per point.
  • Fifth night free: On point redemptions of 5+ consecutive nights, the fifth night is free. Plan longer stays to improve value.
  • Peak vs off-peak: Where dynamic pricing applies, avoid peak dates if possible; off-peak can be 20–30% fewer points.

Transfer partners — airlines

  • Bonvoy points transfer to dozens of airline partners (e.g. Air India Flying Returns, Vistara, United, British Airways). Transfer ratio is often 3 Bonvoy = 1 airline mile (with frequent bonus promotions, e.g. 3:1.2 or 3:1.5).
  • When to transfer: Transfer when the airline redemption value (miles needed for a specific flight, vs cash price) beats using Bonvoy for a hotel stay. Often hotel redemptions in India and South Asia give better value per point than transferring to airlines unless you have a specific high-value flight in mind.
  • Hidden gem: If you have a small Bonvoy balance and don't need a hotel, check transfer bonuses to an airline you use; sometimes the bonus makes the transfer worthwhile for a short-haul award.

When Bonvoy makes sense

  • Redeem for stays when the points cost vs cash rate gives you ₹0.25+ per point (adjust for your own threshold). Category 1–3 and fifth-night-free help.
  • Transfer to airlines when you've run the numbers and the flight redemption value exceeds what you’d get from a hotel redemption.
  • Earn via card when you stay at Marriott often or have a clear redemption plan; otherwise a general cashback or travel card might be simpler.

Bottom line: Bonvoy is strong for hotel redemptions in India and abroad, especially with fifth night free. Use airline transfers selectively when promotions and specific redemptions justify it. Make every rupee count.
